The Story

About This Place

On Hàng Buồm, one of the Old Quarter's most storied merchant streets, Hoang's Restaurant has accumulated over 31,000 Google reviews at a 4.9-star average — a figure rare enough to place it among the most consistently praised dining addresses in Hanoi. The restaurant operates across two distinct modes: a Vietnamese kitchen serving phở and vegan-adapted dishes, and a hands-on cooking class program that draws travelers wanting more than a meal. The vegan offering is notable in a neighborhood where most traditional spots lean heavily on pork and broth, giving plant-based diners a genuine option without the usual compromise. Hoan Kiem is saturated with restaurants competing for the same foot traffic from Hoan Kiem Lake and the weekend walking street, but Hoang's volume of reviews suggests repeat visits and strong word-of-mouth rather than a single viral moment. The cooking class format positions it differently from the surrounding pho shops and bun cha stalls — guests leave with a recipe rather than just a receipt. The address at 54 P. Hàng Buồm sits within the designated Old Quarter conservation zone, meaning the building fabric and street scale retain the narrow-frontage character of pre-war Hanoi. For visitors splitting time between sightseeing and eating, the location makes it a practical stop that doesn't require a detour.

The 30,000+ reviews do not lie—this is easily one of the best restaurants in Hanoi! The food here is great. We ordered the roasted duck rice paper rolls, the pork banh mi, morning glory, and the caramelized braised pork (thit kho). Every single dish was packed with authentic flavor and cooked to perfection. The thit kho was beautifully tender, and the duck rolls were a major highlight. We paid $19 USD, drinks included. But what truly sets this place apart is the exceptional hospitality. We didn't catch our waiter's name, but he went completely above and beyond for us. After we finished eating, we went outside to wait for our Grab ride. He came to find us and let us know that the street was closed to traffic, kindly directing us to a better pickup spot nearby. It was such a thoughtful, caring gesture! Quick tip for future travelers: It is cash-only, so make sure to hit an ATM before you arrive. You cannot miss this spot if you are in Hanoi. Incredible food and genuinely wonderful people!

Hoang’s Restaurant was a really good dining experience for our group of five in Hanoi, especially after walking around in the heat. The restaurant is fully indoors with comfortable air conditioning, which made the meal even more enjoyable and relaxing. The atmosphere felt clean, cozy, and welcoming without being overly fancy. One of the highlights of our meal was the fried fish, which was freshly rolled for us by Vincent at the table. That interactive touch made the experience feel more personal and authentic, and the fish itself was excellent — crispy on the outside, soft and flavorful inside, and perfectly balanced with the herbs and accompaniments. Vincent was very helpful and hospitable. We tried a variety of dishes, and almost everything stood out in its own way. The Vietnamese beef cheese pineapple rice was surprisingly delicious, combining sweet pineapple flavors with savory beef and melted cheese in a way that worked really well together. The pork belly with quail egg was rich, tender, and full of flavor, with the quail eggs adding a nice texture and taste. The fried pork dumplings were crispy, fresh, and easy to keep reaching for throughout the meal. We also ordered the duck curry, which had a comforting and aromatic flavor with tender pieces of duck and a well-balanced curry base. The portions were good for sharing, making it a great place for groups or families who want to try multiple Vietnamese dishes together. Service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal, and the staff made us feel welcome from the moment we entered. Overall, Hoang’s Restaurant is a great spot for quality Vietnamese food in a comfortable indoor setting. Good food, good service, and a memorable experience with the table-side fish rolling by Vincent made this meal worth recommending.

We had a really great experience at Hoang’s Restaurant. The staff member named Lee was incredibly friendly and welcoming. His English was very good, so it was easy for us to communicate and feel comfortable during our visit. He also gave great recommendations for the menu. The food was absolutely delicious, especially the Bun Cha, which was full of flavor and perfectly cooked. The steamed fish was also highly recommended — very fresh, tasty, and definitely one of the best dishes we tried in Hanoi. For Indonesian tourists, this restaurant is a perfect choice because the flavors really suit our taste. The atmosphere was comfortable, the service was excellent, and the overall dining experience was amazing. We would definitely come back again when visiting Hanoi.
