The Story

About This Place

Nhà Chung is one of Hoàn Kiếm's quieter streets, running alongside St. Joseph's Cathedral, and 9981 Coffee - Wine Tapas has planted itself at the foot of it with an offer that covers most hours of the day: espresso drinks through the afternoon, wine and small plates once the light drops. The 4.9-star average across more than 1,300 Google reviews is the kind of consistency that takes years to build on a block this competitive — Hoàn Kiếm has no shortage of cathedral-view cafes, but few hold that rating at that volume.

The tapas format sets it apart from the standard Vietnamese coffee-shop template. Rather than the usual bánh mì or toast pairing, guests can move from a single-origin coffee to a glass of wine and something to eat without changing venues or resetting the mood. That flexibility draws a mix of locals stretching out a weekend afternoon and visitors who want something calmer than the Hồ Hoàn Kiếm promenade a few blocks away.

The address at number 2 puts it at the street's northern end, close enough to the cathedral's west facade that the stonework is visible from the window seats. Early evenings tend to be the most atmospheric, when the cathedral lights come on and Nhà Chung pedestrian traffic slows. For a district built on coffee culture and tourist footfall, 9981 has found a register that feels deliberate rather than opportunistic.

Definitely a place you need to visit! A beautiful terrace with the best view of the cathedral, the friendliest staff and amazing food and drinks. Definitely try the iced coconut drink! 100% recommend, it’s a must!

We went here on a whim and it was so good! The view here of St Joseph’s Cathedral was amazing and the service was even better. And my god the salted coffee was special and so was the mango coconut smoothie we had. This place is a gem in Hanoi! Tung was also really nice and made our night! :)

What a gem next to the cathedral! We ordered an iced Golden lotus tea and ice cream coffee with no sugar . Both are out of this world 😋! The lotus tea was fragrant & laced with salted thick cream; peppered with lotus seeds & jelly round bits. The coffee’s thick cream has a thin layer of chocolate frosting . Together when mixed into coffee makes it better than typical mocha! Ambience was nice even in ground floor. We sat on tiny stools enjoying the drinks while watching the touristy crowds outside the cathedral . Inside the restaurant are retro settings which are just as enjoyable

What a find! Tucked away right by the Cathedral is this little gem. I say ‘little’ because on a first glance it appears unassuming but inviting so we stopped for a refresh …… and surprises await…. After a cold glass of white wine (French from memory) and a couple of cold beers for hubby, I went on the explore. As we climbed the stairs each floor greeted us with tastefully designed furnishings, artwork (commissioned), outside and inside gardens, open windows to maximize the view and even a secret bar!! Fabulous. After only one year they were awarded as a ‘Recommended Restaurant’ with Restaurant Guru; deservedly in my opinion. Every detail in this place has been well thought out and the standard of cleanliness is exemplary and yes I even got to see in the kitchen. The food looks amazing and our biggest regret is we didn’t get a chance to return and savor some more. A total unique oasis.

A beautiful multi-level café and restaurant with a charming 4-floor terrace garden — perfect for relaxing and taking in the city vibe. The ambiance is romantic, especially on a rainy day, and the service is absolutely impeccable. There’s a wide variety of food and drinks to choose from, along with a well-stocked bar. We tried the cappuccino and Patatas Bravas — both were excellent 👌. The staff were very welcoming and attentive, making the experience even more enjoyable. A wonderful spot to unwind and enjoy good food, great service, and cozy vibes in Hanoi.
